Some consider the STG-44 to be the first modern assault rifle.
The Germans developed this gun once they realized that most infantry engagements took place at less than 300 yards.
At these distances the Kar98k was too overpowered and the MP40 was too inaccurate.
The STG-44 filled the need for a medium range and medium power weapon and heavily influenced the design of future assault rifles like the AK-47 and M16.
